While having lunch with some fellow Christians, we talked about how our appetite changed, joking around because we had eaten. Once we filled up, our appetite changed because we were no longer hungry.
I began to think about our appetite for God. Do we get “hungry” or “thirsty” for God and His Word? Do we sit down to a “meal” 3 times a day to fill up on the nutrition our bodies need? Do we have small snacks between meals? Do we have to have a drink the entire day through so we can take sips whenever we feel thirsty? Do we eat more actual physical food more than we feast on God’s Word? If we answer yes, then are we saying physical food or nutrition is more important than God? I am reminded of the verse: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matt 4:4 KJV
I began to realize that we honestly look to physical food more than we do God’s Holy, Living Word to feed our souls. We seem to refuse to understand that God meant for us to desire His Word more than physical food as well as we are to actually obtain, seek after and prove by our actions that we desire to feast at His table. We wonder why we don’t see healings as Jesus told us we would do greater things than this. It’s because we don’t feast on the word of God as Jesus did. Jesus sought after God with an ongoing appetite that He fed every moment of every day. He didn’t just sit at the Father’s table for 3 substantial meals, nor did He just “snack” throughout the day. He stayed in constant contact with God His Father. We don’t see demons being cast out anymore because (1) we’ve decided they don’t exist anymore. (2) We’ve created excuses as to why someone acts in an outlandish manner when they are possessed by demons. It’s real still today people. But because our appetite for truth has been diminished, because we don’t hunger and thirst after God’s truth, we’ve become satisfied with false bibles, teachers and preachers. We don’t see the gift of God being used in the proper manner as the word tells us they should be. But rather they are either used out of context or not at all. We don’t see people desiring the Holy Ghost to in-dwell them and be moved to worship our Risen Savior. Ladies and gentlemen, Jesus is NOT dead! He is alive! He arose so we could obtain life and have it more abundantly. But how in the world can we truly obtain it if we do not hunger and thirst after it? How in the world can we help a lost and dying world when we, the children of God, do not have a healthy appetite for Him first?
Lord God, please forgive me for I am preaching to the choir!!! Please forgive me for my lack of appetite for You, Your Word and all that You have for me. Forgive me for not praying in such a way that would fill my soul with the desire for You greater than anything else in my life. I say I want to be found faithful, but how can I if I struggle to be hungry, thirsty and desirous of You. I want to take a seat at Your table and fill up every opportunity I’m given. Not just once, twice or three times a day, but every second of every day. To be found praying without ceasing, witnessing without ceasing, living proof of Your love, forgiveness and mercy through every part of my life, not perfect but striving for perfection – aka making heaven my eternal home. Change my appetite Lord.
